CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

The deeper the shuttle went into the Western Scar, the less anyone felt like talking. Behind Ryan and Ryder, the Enforcers and the Zurna kept quiet.

The captain glanced at him occasionally and he steadied himself for another conversation when she tensed up, but the words never came.

The pale light that made it through the granite-like clouds had faded by the time they reached the next city, leaving them in darkness save for the shuttle’s lights. Ryan followed the perimeter, scanning the terrain and comparing what he saw to a map from his MOB-X hovering above his arm.

“What are you looking for, Fall?” Ryder said.

“The landing zone from my last mission here. You won’t find anything on the sensors,” Ryan said, when she looked at the sensors.

“Why not?”

Ryan didn’t answer. With only two beams of light, it was difficult to find the right place.

“Lieutenant…”

“There.” Ryan pointed to a spot draped in shadow.

The lights flooded the ground and revealed a rock formation, a large trident pointing to the sky, and an open space behind it surrounded by rubble and debris. It was large enough for ships bigger than their Slipstream and Ryan set them down in the middle. The ground wasn’t completely flat, and the right side of the shuttle touched down first, jerking everyone to the side.

“Oops,” Ryan said as Ryder glared at him. “Pretty sure I didn’t do that the last time I set down here.”

“While I’m glad you still have a sense of humour, Lieutenant, try saving it for somewhere more appropriate,” she snapped, standing and walking to the main compartment. “Come on.”

“Yes, sir.”

After completing the shuttle’s shutdown procedure, Ryan followed her and was greeted by a flurry of activity as everyone got up and completed a final check of their supplies. Oaf crouched next to an open floor panel with Ryder next to him. Sketcher, Wisp and Ren stood behind him. Ryan hovered in the doorway; the two Zurna remained seated.

After a quick conversation with Ryder, Oaf reached into the locker and brought out a black rifle.

“This is a compact repeater.” Oaf held the weapon up for everyone to see. “Projectile needle rounds, light armour piercing, ninety shots per magazine. Firing modes include single-shot, burst and rapid fire. I’d recommend ten mags in your bag.”

“We won’t need this kind of firepower,” Ryan said, stepping forward. “We’re not here to get into a firefight.”

“It’s better to be prepared. Dissenters have been known to be violent in the past,” Wisp said, taking the rifle from Oaf.

“Not Second Nation.”

“Wisp’s right,” Ryder said. “There’s no reason not to be prepared. Get your packs, magazines, lights, visors and back-up comms.”

The Enforcers each grabbed a small backpack and collected their equipment. Some went into the packs and others were clipped to their belts. Oaf handed out four rifles and took one for himself.

“I’ll pass,” Ryan said, waggling two fingers.

“They’re safe, and you can still take an Enforcex?” Oaf suggested, holding one out to Ryan.

“We don’t need them, and if we go in armed to the teeth, Second Nation won’t trust us.
